Barcelona - live & sleep like a local

There are a number of advantages of staying in an apartment over a hotel: cost, privacy and space to name the obvious. However, for me the number one reason is for that short period, staying in an apartment makes me forget that I'm a tourist.

If you're going to Barcelona with a group of friends, one apartment I would recommend is Montcada A, a beautiful, converted medieval palace located on Calle Montacada in El Born - just a short walk from the Picasso museum.

The look
High ceilings, a mix of hardwood and concrete floors and Scandinavian furniture gives this gothic building a contemporary and high-end feel.

The details
The apartment sleeps eight; in two double beds and four single beds. It  includes  a TV, fully equipped kitchen, washing machine and is air conditioned.  There are two bathrooms - an ensuite wetroom,  two separate WCs with Phillip Starck designed toilets and tub with overhead shower.
Living space with mezzanine level above

It has an open plan design, with the main living area opening on to the kitchen diner.  At the side of the kitchen is a balcony - a fantastic spot where for two evenings we enjoyed people watching while enjoying a drink.

The rooms
One of the two double beds is located on a mezzanine glass floor above the main living area, and underneath a beautiful turquoise, ornate ceiling.

Double room two is located in its own room leading to a industrial-luxe bathroom with black slate tiles and separate WC.  The room also opens on to a small terrace complete with bistro table and chairs.

The other four single beds are located in a room to the rear of the building on a split mezzanine level.  The mezzanine level is located very close to the ceiling, so is not really suited to anyone taller than 5'8".

Price: From €261.50 (approx. £221) per day which is about €37.50 per person - it's chiconomics for such a stylish and well positioned abode.

Verdict:  Fantastic, stylish and centrally located apartment for a large group of friends.  It's somewhere I wish I could own and I will definitely be returning.  The pictures here don't do it justice, so its worth checking out the ones on the Apartment Ramblas website.
