Styled like an old gentleman's club Mark's Bar is grown-up Soho cool at its best. Found underneath HIX, this ain't no ordinary restaurant bar. It's a destination bar in it's own right. The best thing there's none of that pretentious door policy you seem to find at the front of most bars in London, or overpriced concoctions.
The drinks list is extensive and it'll take you a while to choose from the delicious number of cocktails , spirits, beers and wines, priced from £8.75 for a cocktail. Each offering on the menu is accompanied by a whimisical backgrounder as well as an ingredients list. There is also a section called 'Mark's Libations' featuring drinks using seasonal British ingredients.
What I loved most about Mark's Bar is the quirky little touches, like this charming water jug above, and the bar billards table positioned at the side of the room, and it's undeniably olde wolde British charm and sophistication.
Seated under HIX the 'Bar snax' menu isn't a disappointment either. We really enjoyed this plate of Oysters (£2.25 each).
However if you're looking for more hearty pub grub then your tastes are catered here too with delights such as chips and curry sauce (£3.50), Scrump-fried sweet 'n' sour chicken (£3.50), and of not forgetting the AB's favourite pork scratchings served with apple sauce (£3.25).
Verdict: This is one of my favourite bars in London. Go for some pre-drinks before dinner in Soho or a night cap (it doesn't close until 1am), but make sure you check on the website for opening times as it's often booked out private functions.
